Shatner recorded the narration on or shortly after that date, per memos at UCLA.

Regarding a different recording being used for "The Man Trap" and "Charlie X," I don't know anything about that. But the lines in it would have certainly been the same. The earlier versions of the narration were never recorded -- those were just working drafts as the refined the words.

More here: https://www.trekbbs.com/threads/star-trek-s1-intro-narration-variation.297383/
Michaelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00552147805234543255noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-739267574084387275.post-61099104374585386742018-09-04T11:23:50.324-07:002018-09-04T11:23:50.324-07:00In spite of the memos to the contrary, every print...In spite of the memos to the contrary, every print of Mudd’s Women, aside from TOS-R, drops the “also starring” from Nimoy’s credit. I’ve checked the vhs/laserdisc prints and Blu Rays.

Thanks for all of your hard work and research on this! It explains why the early home video tapes had a different credit font for The Man Trap, as they were taken from the adjusted prints, while the DVDs used the original prints.

Does anyone know if they changed the theme music for first season reruns? I always assumed it was done for home video, but since there were different source prints, it brings up a possibility of it being done sooner. Anyone? See my answers below. I will follow up this response shortly with the raw data (due to length, this must be two separate posts).

1. According to the credits paperwork at UCLA, the first episode (in production order) of season two to replace "Desilu Productions Inc." with "Paramount Pictures Corporation" in the copyright line was "The Doomsday Machine." If you look at straight production order, the copyright line is inconsistant, but if you look at the first trial print dates for each episode (when each episode was actually completed) everything lines up. Paramount replaced Desilu on the copyright line for every episode finished after September 13, 1967.

2. The paperwork, in production order, is totally consistant here. Every episode filmed before "The Immunity Syndrome" says "A Desilu Production in association with Norway Corporation." Starting with "The Immunity Syndrome," and continuing through the end of the season, every episode says "A Paramount Production in association with Norway Corporation." The paperwork I have for "Bread and Circuses" indicates that the episode was supposed to say "A Desilu Production..." and have the Desilu logo. There's even an attached memo from business affairs affirming this fact. If this was later changed, because the episode was held back for so long, there's no paperwork at UCLA to that effect.

3. This sort of thing isn't specified in the credits paperwork, so I cannot speak to it. It's likely Star Trek used whatever logo Paramount made available to them.Michaelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00552147805234543255noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-739267574084387275.post-62760349069266062392016-05-31T07:27:55.072-07:002016-05-31T07:27:55.072-07:00Quite right on "[sic]." This has been corrected.

Regarding the larger point, my assumption is that when the directing credit was moved up to the beginning of Act I (right after the episode's title), this was considered to be part of the "opening titles" by the DGA. This is how LOST IN SPACE (1965-68), THE LONER (1965-66), and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE (1966-73) did their credits. The other possibility is that when the credits were done this way, the DGA was willing to grant a waiver, but since Justman's memo regarding the season two credits for STAR TREK (which were done this way) does not mention a waiver, and since so many other shows did their credit this way, the initial option seems much more likely to me.Michaelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00552147805234543255noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-739267574084387275.post-3903341064907811102016-05-31T05:52:25.452-07:002016-05-31T05:52:25.452-07:00Interesting piece. But there's one outstanding...Interesting piece. But there's one outstanding question: If the DGA objected to including a creator credit in the main titles, why was the show able to restore that credit in seasons 2 & 3?

Also, there shouldn't be a "[sic]" notation in "we shall at that time effect the Main Title changes." To effect, as a verb, means to bring about or accomplish, to put into effect. "We shall effect changes" is perfectly correct grammar.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
